How Can I Quit Smoking

Smoking has to be one of the most addictive and destructive habits in the world, and it can take a serious toll on your body. Even if you only smoke for a couple of weeks it will have a detrimental effect on your body. Obviously not smoking at all is always the best idea. However, for those who have already started smoking and are now addicted, there are many quit smoking aids out there that can help.

If you are looking to try and quit smoking, there are a vast amount of quit smoking aids, options and techniques out there which can be confusing and make the best decision difficult in terms of which method is going to offer you the best chances of quitting smoking for good

The Nicotine Patch

The nicotine patch is probably one of the most commonly used quit smoking aids . A nicotine patch will most commonly resemble a tan or clear bandage, usually square in shape and around the size of a 10 cent piece, and it can be placed anywhere on the body. Most users like to place it in an inconspicuous spot on the body so that no one will be able to tell that they are wearing it at all.

Chewing Nicotine Gum

Another popular quit smoking aid that you may want to try is nicotine gum. This is one of the most commonly talked about products to help you quit smoking, and one well worth trying. Most people are able to take the gum without any problems, but if you have certain health conditions you may not be able to use this method. The beauty of chewing nicotine gum is that it can simply replace the action of going for a cigarette break, with the action of placing gum in your mouth to chew, so there is something you can do when the cravings hit. With the nicotine patch, the routine of going for a cigarette is entirely broken.

Some of the health issues that could prevent you from chewing nicotine gum can include a history of heart disease, stomach problems such as ulcers, pregnancy or breast feeding.

Quit Smoking by Hypnosis

If you have tried other quit smoking methods and they do not seem to work for you, you may want to try a more alternative idea - quit smoking by hypnosis. This method of quitting may scare some people, but there is really no reason to worry.

Hypnosis is the least risky of the main quit smoking aids, and is definitely something that should be considered when you really want to quit. It works by subliminally reprogramming the mind to ignore impulses that have become ingrained over time, and help to reduce the urge to smoke.

Remember, these are just three ideas and there are many other quit smoking products and ideas available to help you in your bid to quit that you will want to be aware of as well. You may need to use a combination of two or more quit smoking aids to get the ultimate result you are looking for.

Self-help Stop Smoking Books: Burning up the Pages

Self-help Stop Smoking Books: Burning up the Pages

The self help section of any book store is huge. There are unlimited numbers of books on an endless list of topics. The Internet has even more selections available, plus links to other self help resources. For some, a book is a tangible anchor, almost a touch stone of sorts to help them refocus when they need, and to serve as a daily guide as they try to break this powerful addiction. Smoking is not just a bad habit, it is an addiction, one that will be hard to break without some form of help.

I personally love books, I collect them on a variety of topics. But, there are times when even I cannot get the information that I want out of a book- I can either not focus, or the author has missed the part that I consider relevant for me. And even with the best of self help books, there might be information that would be missing. Buying or borrowing stacks and stacks of books might not be convenient and who has the time to read all of those books anyway?

Self help books will be good if you have the time to read them, and if you can find the ones that will give you the widest range of information with the clearest language and the most pleasant reading experience. If you do not like the writing, you will not read the book, that is the golden rule of publishing. Know what kind of style will work best for you, and know which style will be the ones that will make you slam the book cover shut and never open it again. Preachy, know it all authors are a huge turn off for me, for instance, so those books would never work if I needed them for self help of any kind.

Books are not the only things available in the self-help section. Some people prefer the reassurance of a voice giving them advice and comfort- self help books on tape or on CD can be just the thing the busiest person needs to break their addiction to smoking. Self help smoking books are good, but only if you have the time to read them. Some are better done than others though with quizzes and fast facts in the margins, it might be best to consider a combination of the self help book and the CD to quit smoking.

Another option is hypnosis- which usually contains some recommendation to follow up with a self help book or tape to reinforce the hypnotic suggestion. Following directions is the only way to accomplish the goal of ending your addiction to smoking. Some people will have good, long lasting success with hypnosis and self help books, others will need something different. Only you know what will be good for you and what will never work. As always, make sure that you consult your doctor and get his advice when you start a stop smoking program.

Chomp, Chew, Grumble: How to Quit Smoking with Gum

Chomp, Chew, Grumble: How to Quit Smoking with Gum

You are not a cold turkey kind of gal, you have already decided that. You need help in the form of strong, loving friends, a daily dose of chocolate and gum. Lots and lots of gum. Will you use the regular gum and pray that you can make it through each day without strangling the first smart aleck that makes a wise crack, or will you be more sensible and use the nicotine gum? (For the sake of the necks of all the smarty pants around you, I hope you opt for the latter.)

The nicotine gum comes in two strengths, 2mg and 4mg of nicotine. Which one you choose will depend on many factors: how much do you smoke each day, how well do you control cravings now, how dedicated are you to your successful quitting. Once those questions have been answered, then you can decided not only how strong the dosage should be, but how often you should allow yourself to chew a piece of gum. Of course, you should read all the warnings and instructions on the box, and consulting your doctor is a good idea as well.

Depending on the brand that you buy, the gum comes in several different flavors, but I have heard complaints that the gum was gritty or that it did not hold together like regular gum would. Of course, regular gum does not deliver nicotine to your system either, so it's a trade off. You can have good chewing texture, or the nicotine, your choice.

Most boxes of the nicotine gum will have an insert which will help you set up a gum schedule as well as the signs and triggers that you might need to take an extra piece. There are just times in our lives when additional stress just makes us crazy, times that makes some of us pop our knuckles, or pace or smoke. If you know your triggers then you can work to avoid them, or you can have a plan in action to handle them without lighting up. Some people choose to chew regular gum in between doses of the nicotine gum to keep their mouth occupied and to keep from overeating, but that is a personal choice, entirely up to you. Whatever you do though, do not smoke while you are chewing the gum, the extra nicotine can be enough to make you nauseas or dizzy.

Some people do not like the gum schedule, but it would seem more logical to know that at such and such a time you will have this piece of gum- it would replace that cigarette that no matter how much you deny your body had you scheduled to crave anyway. You may not like setting a schedule, but you were letting something inanimate and frankly dangerous set the schedule for you. Take back the control of your life and your health. Quit smoking, do it today. If the gum can help you accomplish it, then you need to get hold of a box of it and chew away.

Find Help to Quit Smoking

Find Help to Quit Smoking

You know that smoking is bad for you and you want to stop, but you do not know exactly how to accomplish the feat. You remember that first stolen cigarette, snuck out of you mother's purse. You coughed and hacked for that first dizzying puff, and then nicotine filled your blood stream and suddenly it was the thing that had been missing for all of your life. You found yourself thinking about cigarettes and smoking more and more often. What started as a childish dare has suddenly morphed into a brain altering addiction just as powerful as any other drug.

Flash forward several years, decades later. You cough until you are red in the face each and every morning, a gentle tickle fight with your children leaves you winded. But what happened the other night might have been the worst thing of all- not only could you not perform when your wife made a move on you, the sheer effort of trying nearly killed you. You know that you are in bad shape and that something, anything must be done. Reluctantly, you visit a doctor who tells you that your first step to better health is to quit smoking. Make your doctor you ally in that battle right from the start. Ask your doctor for advice and suggestions. Not only are there medications that can be prescribed, there are programs that include behavior modification, self help books and tapes. Other suggestions could include the nicotine patch or gum as well as some other more "out there" ideas like acupuncture and hypnosis. Whatever you choose to try, make sure that it is agreeable with any other medications that your doctor has prescribed. Keep your doctor informed about your progress, including any setbacks that you might have.

Many people find success in a group setting. These programs are available in a number of different settings, run by different agencies, all with the same goal of helping you to quit smoking. Go online to the number of smoking cessation websites and sign up for their free encouraging emails, or to chat with others who are trying to quit smoking. You can cheer each other on, offer your own advice or get tips from others who understand exactly what you are going through because they are too. If you do not have access to a computer or prefer the face to face approach, check with your local health department, or church bulletin board for a more local group. Speak with the human resources department at your job- more and more employers are recognizing how costly smoking is in the long run and are now offering incentives to get their work force smoke free. These incentives might include paying for nicotine patches or a cessation program. A support group might even be offered onsite, you simply have to ask.

Finding help to quit smoking is only a matter of making the decision and sticking with it. You will be shocked to find out how many people are behind you one hundred percent. Your health matters, not only to yourself but to those who love you the most- if you cannot stop yourself from lighting up, think of them. Everyone is pulling for you, getting support is just a matter of reaching out for it. Good luck.
